About Magnus
The Night the Chimney Cracked
It was fifty below, the kind of cold that makes nails snap and rubber turn to glass. I woke up to a sound I'd never heard before — a sharp crack from the stovepipe, then the low groan of metal pulling apart. The chimney had split from the cold, and the woodstove was my only heat for three hundred miles in any direction.
There was no calling anyone. No running to a hardware store. Just me, a headlamp, frozen tools, and a few hours before the cabin's heat bled out for good. I got it patched before dawn — barely — and I never made that mistake again. That's how I learned almost everything I know: by doing it wrong first, in the cold, alone.
For forty years, none of this needed writing down. You just did it, or you asked the fella down the road who'd already done it wrong once and fixed it. But the folks who still know this are getting old, and their kids are moving to Anchorage, Seattle, wherever the jobs are — and taking none of it with them.
